When my kiddo was younger we were obsessed with detective stories like the Nate the Great and the Jigsaw Jones series. Truthfully anything with a bit of mystery, sleuthing, and humor was a must. In elementary school, we started branching out into more graphic novels, the Diary of the Wimpy Kid phase and later the Timmy Failure series, both of which are hilarious. Timmy Failure has come a long way in the past seven years, Pastis has written a total of seven books and the first book, Mistakes Were Made was just adapted into a film for Disney+. I hope the movie will encourage more kids to read the books.
Timmy Failure Mistakes Were Made Movie Tie-In Edition is basically the original book with the new movie artwork on the cover. I was really hoping there would also be stills from the movie included, but sadly this isn't the case. I do want to say that I really adore the cover. It has three elements from the book that I love. There's Timmy's business partner, Total the 1500 pound polar bear, the Failuremobile, AKA Timmy's mom's Segway and Timmy with his rather determined expression. I'd actually forgotten just how confident of a detective that Timmy feels he is until I started re-reading Mistakes Were Made. In this first book, we learn about Timmy's detective agency, Total Failure Inc. and his first case, finding out who stole a classmate's Halloween candy. We're introduced to Timmy's classmates, teachers and various other people in his life. Most importantly Timmy's single mother who recently had her hours cut back at work. Timmy is on a mission to advance his detective agency so that he can help provide for her, but unfortunately, he's hit a string of bad luck. Timmy's Failuremobile has been stolen, his nemesis opens a rival detective agency and he faces the possibility of losing some of his unresolved cases. Timmy is a very bright imaginative kid, filled with illusions of greatness and that he has the best detective agency, despite his real difficulties at school, and with his mom's new boyfriend. The story is entertaining and Pastis has a knack of blending some laugh out loud moments with the real-life issues that Timmy experiences. Gotta love a kid who holds teleconferences with his mother to discuss getting a bigger office space and more finances. Now that the Disney+ movie is out, I'm very curious to see how Disney handles the ambiguity of whether Total is real or imaginative.
